Zippy Marinara Sauce

This easy (and slightly boozy) sauce is great tossed with pasta, as a pizza topping or as an addition to a big pot of chicken soup. Make a large batch, pack in jars and give away at your next get together as a hostess gift -- it's always good to have a jar on hand for when you need it!

PREP TIME: 5 minutes
COOK TIME: 35 minutes

2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
1 medium onion, diced
3-5 cloves garlic, crushed with a flat knife and thinly sliced
1 cup diced fresh basil
1/2 cup red wine
1 tablespoon raw sugar
1 28-ounce can crushed or diced tomatoes
1 teaspoon lemon juice
3 tablespoons brandy
Salt and pepper, to taste

Sauté onions 10-12 minutes, add garlic and basil. Cover and cook for 5 more minutes. Uncover and add wine, tomatoes and salt and pepper. Simmer for 15 minutes. Add brandy and lemon before finishing.
