The Best Caramelized Onion Cheeseburgers Ever
Ingredients
For the burgers:
1 1/2 pounds ground beef (80/20 makes a juicy burger!)
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1 teaspoon garlic powder
4 slices cheddar, American, or provolone
4 burger buns

For the caramelized onions:
2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
2 tablespoons butter
1 tablespoon olive oil
Pinch of salt
Optional: 1/2 teaspoon sugar (helps deepen sweetness)

For the toppings:
8 slices bacon
1 large tomato, sliced
4–8 lettuce leaves (romaine or iceberg for crunch)
Mayonnaise or Thousand Island dressing
Directions
Preheat your grill or grill pan to medium-high heat.

Make the onions: Heat butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium-low heat. Add the sliced onions and stir gently to coat the all onions with the fat. Cook slowly, stirring occasionally, for 20–25 minutes until golden and soft. Season with salt and stir in sugar (if using) during the last few minutes of cooking. Remove from heat.

Cook the bacon: Cook bacon in a skillet or oven until crispy. Drain on paper towels and set aside.

Make the burger patties: Divide beef into 4 equal patties (don’t overwork the meat or the burgers will be tough). Season both sides with salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
Grill or over medium-high heat for about 3–4 minutes per side for medium rare.

In the last minute of cooking, add cheese slices and cover loosely so they melt.

Lightly butter buns and toast on the grill or in a pan until golden.

To assemble the burgers, spread mayo or dressing on the bottom of each bun. Add lettuce, tomato, a patty, a scoop of onions and last, the top bun. Serve and enjoy!
